Aphids are common but easy to control organically. Here are 10 methods that actually work without harmful chemicals.
Identifying Aphids
Tiny soft-bodied insects 1-4mm long, found in clusters on new growth and leaf undersides. Look for sticky honeydew, curled leaves, stunted growth, and black sooty mold.
10 Natural Methods
- Strong water spray — Blast aphids off with firm water stream. Repeat every 2-3 days.
- Neem oil spray — 2 tbsp neem oil + 1 tsp dish soap + 1 quart water. Disrupts life cycle.
- Insecticidal soap — 1-2 tbsp castile soap per quart water. Must contact aphids directly.
- Attract ladybugs — Plant dill, fennel, and yarrow. One ladybug eats 5,000 aphids per year.
- Companion planting — Marigolds and nasturtiums repel aphids. Nasturtiums act as trap crops.
- Garlic spray — Blend 4 cloves + 2 cups water, strain, dilute, and spray. Aphids hate the smell.
- Diatomaceous earth — Dust around plant bases. Reapply after rain.
- Reflective mulch — Silver plastic mulch confuses and repels aphids from low-growing crops.
- Prune infested growth — Remove and dispose of severely infested stems immediately.
- Parasitic wasps — Plant dill flowers to attract Braconid wasps that lay eggs inside aphids.
